Huge thanks to Just Hockey (affiliate link) for allowing me to take a look one of their Bauer Supreme Shadow goalie sets, which included the pads, blocker, and Vapor 90 style glove. Thanks to them I got a chance to wear this set on ice, do tests like this thigh rise puck machine test and do a full review on the whole set (which will be coming soon).
Bauer has (in my opinion) gone a strange direction with the Supreme Shadow goalie pads with their stiffness profile for their recent release. These pads now offer a “mid” stiffness and are similar to the profile and overall flexibility of the Ultrasonic pads I have used and looked at in the past. This brings the Shadow (Bauer’s “stiff”) line of pads closer to the Hyperlite in terms of thigh rise shape and stiffness. I thought the Mach was almost the perfect level of stiffness for a retail “stiff” pad, offering solid puck stopping abilities while still having a bit of a Z shape for easier butterfly closer and not being as extreme as the X-Stiff pads seen in this video
Make sure you check out the puck machine thigh rise test I did on these Bauer Supreme Shadow goalie pads and see how they compare against my Pro Custom Hyperlite 2 pads.
Both the Bauer Hyperlite 2 with X-Stiff thigh rise and the Supreme Shadow pads in stock stiffness preformed how I expected. The Shadows are much softer than I believe they should be for a Bauer’s “stiff” pad and I am disappointed Bauer went back to a softer profile from the Mach line. I really feel like Bauer is blending these lines together too much, where now the shape and flex profile are pretty similar between the two lines, especially if you bend the Shadow’s yourself to give them more of an S shape.
If this video and post was helpful, it would be greatly appreciated if you supported the site and YouTube channel by shopping at Just Hockey (affiliate link). Everything through any of the links always comes directly back into the channel and website so I can keep making reviews and testing out hockey equipment!
While I also hate to promote my other things, it has become evident to me it is important to get a viewer base that will help me continue doing reviews like this (I can’t afford to always buy new equipment!).
