In my never ending search of the BEST gear possible, I ended up being recommended the McKenney XPG2 Pro Elite goalie pants as “NHL quality pants but at a cheaper cost.” Obviously that statement had me intrigued and I was in the market for specifically a black pair of pants since my pro stock CCM HPG12A Ducks pants were abused through 6+ years of use and the protection and just overall conditions of the pants were becoming a problem.
I decided to take my CCM pro stock goalie pants to McKenney to compare their pant to the NHL ones they’d be replacing. I also wanted a guideline for sizing, since I normally like to wear a Large but want to ensure I can tuck my chest protector into the pant without issue. At McKenney, I met the man behind the company. When I asked if there were beef options on the pant, I was assured these were protective enough and comparable to top end pants available. While I had my doubts, I figured I’d take the plunge because of the positive feedback I read about these pants.
My experience with smaller goalie brands has been a pretty disappointing one in the past so far, with my chest protector from Kenesky falling short, the PGS gloves and pads (also made by Kenesky) being extremely disappointing, and the Passau pads and blocker not nearly living up to their hype. I was hoping McKenneky would buck that trend and be closer aligned with my experiences with Kova accessories and Maxond protection. Overall, I was very disappointed in these pants. Protection from day 1 against Junior B and Junior A players was already lacking compared to my extremely used and basically falling apart CCM HPG12A pants. I had an almost weekly occurrence of bruises on the inside thigh and I constantly had problems tucking in chest protectors because of the shorter sides of the pants.
While I love reviewing and testing equipment… unfortunately this purchase was a disappointing one and again adds to the list of disappointing gear from small brands.
